DIY AI Visibility Audit Workbook
Table of Contents
In Part One and Part Two of our AI Search Audit Series, we covered the basics of AI Search (why it matters to your B2B marketing efforts and how it differs from SEO) and provided a framework for auditing your brand’s AI visibility across leading AI search engines. With everything you’ve learned, you are now ready to perform your own AI visibility audit.
The workbook assumes you’ve read the framework it was based on. If you need a refresher course on any of these dimensions of AI visibility or are still not sure why you need to do more than SEO to bolster your AI presence, we recommend checking the other pages in this series:
Before You Use This AI Search Workbook
Make this workbook work for you. Before you get started, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- If you’re auditing your brand for the first time, use the workbook as a diagnostic tool to get a baseline of your AI visibility.
- If you’re tracking your AI search optimisation efforts over time, you can return to this workbook to measure how your visibility has changed.
- Run your audit once a week for the first month, then every 30, 60, and 90 days.
- As we mentioned in Part One, you’ll make your life a lot easier by using tools like Semrush, Screaming Frog, GA4, GSC, Ahrefs, and PageSpeed Insights.
Step 1: Test Your AI Visibility Baseline
Run at least 50 prompts across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot, covering branded, comparative, problem-led, buyer-led, and geographic queries.
We recommend performing this step in a fresh, logged-out LLM session with no previous conversation history or saved memory. This will help minimise the influence of previous conversations and provide a more consistent validation of your services.
Log the results in the workbook to calculate your mention rate, citation rate, and AI Share of Voice. These are the numbers that tell you whether AI engines know your brand exists at all.
Step 2: Score Your Content Extractability
Not every page is written in a way AI can lift and cite. This step scores your pages against six structural factors (answer-first formatting, question-style headings, fact density, and more) so you know which pages are AI-ready and which need work.
Step 3: Audit Your Site’s Technical Setup
Before AI engines can cite you, they need to be able to crawl and parse your content. This step checks three things: whether AI bots are blocked in robots.txt, whether your schema markup is in place, and whether your content is fresh enough to be trusted.
Step 4: Audit Your Authority & Trust Signals
AI engines can lean heavily on third-party sources to validate a brand, such as Wikipedia, review platforms, awards, and author credentials. This step scores how complete and consistent your presence is across those sources, since gaps here directly limit how often you get cited.
Step 5: Check Your Platform-Specific Readiness
As AI engines use different citation algorithms, each one weighs signals differently. A brand can be highly visible on ChatGPT and invisible on Perplexity. This step scores your readiness platform by platform against the signals that matter most to each one.
Step 6: Benchmark Your Brand Against Competitors
Numbers mean more in context. This step lines your scores up against competitors across every metric above, so you can see where you’re ahead, where you’re behind, and which gaps are worth prioritising.
Step 7: Build Your AI Search Action Plan
Turn everything you’ve found into a plan with three tiers, each with owners, effort estimates, and expected impact:
- Priority 0: Quick wins you can ship this week
- Priority 1: content fixes for the next couple of months
- Priority 2: longer-term authority building
Have Questions About Your Results?
You’ve now got the data, and boy, do we mean DATA! But turning six sections of scores into a clear read on where you actually stand can be its own challenge, especially if you’re having to run these prompts and manually enter them yourself.
And that was only the audit part.
As we said, you should measure true AI visibility over time. That means prompting across five engines, running technical checks, benchmarking your brand against your competitors, and logging all these scores by hand on a regular basis.
We’ve designed GeekyIQ to do the heavy lifting for you. In one session, our AI search strategists will assess your AI visibility and walk you through your results, benchmark you against competitors, and hand you a prioritised roadmap that you can start actioning immediately. From there, you’ll get ongoing access to the platform to track your visibility over time, without re-running this workbook by hand every month.
