Yup, you heard it. On 12 May 2026, OpenAI officially launched advertising inside ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. And guess what? GeekyTech has secured early access to this new inventory channel through StackAdapt, our programmatic demand-side platform (DSP).
No big deal or anything 😎
Over 900 million users turn to AI every week to find products, ask for recommendations, and compare brands. It’s no secret that AI systems are rapidly emerging as a pretty important step between discovering the right brand and making a purchase.
This is a big deal, obviously. It has been whispered about for years (how time flies), and now PPC strategists can finally get their hands dirty. Not to sound like the movie trailer guy for a Denis Villeneuve movie, but this will change the game not only for PPC, but also for SEO, GEO, and the future of search.
Here’s what you need to know:
StackAdapt: the DSP That Makes it Possible
StackAdapt is one of the first programmatic platforms to enable advertising in ChatGPT. At the time of this writing, we’re working with our contacts there to get more documentation and to start experimenting with this brand-new channel.
And by the way, if you’re not familiar with the term demand-side platform, we’ve got an oldie-but-a-goodie blog post all about programmatic display advertising for you.
How Your Ads Will Be Displayed
Everyone, from pundits to plebeians, has expressed concerns over how ChatGPT will display their ads. The main concern was that the ‘little AI engine that could’ wouldn’t differentiate ads from regular answers, thereby undermining the credibility of the responses.
However, looking at this promo video from OpenAI, it’s obvious that all sponsored ads will be contextual, clearly labelled, and set apart from the bot’s core answer.
Can Everyone and Anyone Get Started?
Hold your horses there, cowboy 🤠
Early access is strictly designed for low-stakes verticals or those with fewer regulatory restrictions. This reflects early-stage best practices and OpenAI’s current platform guidelines.
❌ Healthcare and pharmaceuticals, mental health and wellness, high-risk financial services and gambling, legal services, adult content and dating, political content, alcohol, tobacco and drugs
✅ B2B software and saas, travel and hospitality, education and online learning, high-consideration e-commerce, low-risk financial services and insurance, professional services.
This might be a good time to mention that in these early stages, ads are only targeting users in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (no sign of mama just yet 🇬🇧)
What This Means for Organic Search & GEO
If you’re already investing in GEO strategies, this will impact you in two important ways:
Paid and Organic Are Converging in AI
If you’ve ever hit Google with the one-two punch, then you know that appearing as a top organic result and sponsored result gives you a significant advantage over your competitors who only hit one of these.
The same will be true for ChatGPT ads. Clients who are visible organically in LLM responses AND appear in paid placements will start to dominate.
Search Traffic Will Continue to Decline
We don’t like dangling this fact willy-nilly because, as of right now, the truth is that Google is still overwhelmingly first in its league. In fact, according to Stat Counter, ChatGPT has less than 1% of the global search market share.
But the point is, we all know which way the wind is blowing, and it’s starting to pick up speed.
Continuing to stick with traditional search alone is the equivalent of burying your head in the sand. The point is to get ahead of the curve (or wind) so that by the time your competitors get around to taking AI search seriously, you’re already a solid presence in these high-visibility spaces.
This was for sure what Charles Darwin was talking about when he did(n’t) say: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”
