How the Geeks Help the Homeless

Christmas 2020 was weird. Thanks, Covid.

Needless to say, many of us struggled. But not as much as one of society’s most forgotten communities: the homeless. While we were sequestered at home and forced to watch endless reruns on Netflix, it’s like some of us forgot that this particular brand of boredom was a luxury not everyone could afford.

That’s when we got the idea to spread a little holiday cheer to London’s homeless community.

How it All Started

We tend to believe that donating to charities is iffy at best. You know the scandals. You know what percentage of our donations actually end up benefiting those in need. We wanted to find a way to give as directly as possible. The only way to guarantee that 100% of our contributions would help the homeless was by taking matters into our own hands.

That’s when we got the idea of raiding Geeky Tech’s closet.

How Our Customers Helped Without Even Knowing It

For Christmas, we gifted our customers online vouchers to use at our swag shop. They could pick from our collection of beanies, sweatshirts, jackets, and more.

What we didn’t tell them was that every time they traded in their vouchers, we matched the value of the merchandise and filled barrel bags with essential items to give to the homeless. Every barrel bag is packed with warm and waterproof clothing, as well as toiletries.

This week, the team was finally able to fulfill our dream of giving back to the community. Equipped with our essential packs, we set out on the streets of London to try and make a small difference in the lives of those in need.

Giving Back in the Future

This week was a great success, and we want to keep doing it. And you can help!

We want to make it easy for our customers to get involved—not just at Christmas. We’re going to keep filling barrel bags and handing them out to the homeless. Now, we’re busy restructuring our merchandise shop so that every transaction—whether it be through vouchers, points, or pounds—contributes to this project.

Stay tuned for more updates!
